Ingredients of Betnovate-N Cream

How does Betnovate-N Cream work? / Mode of action
Betamethasone in Betnovate-N Cream works by three main mechanisms.
Anti-inflammatory action: Betamethasone works by binding to the DNA in cells and producing a glycoprotein called lipocortin. Lipocortin thus works by inhibiting PLA2 (phospholipase A2) and further inhibits the production of prostaglandins. Prostaglandins are generally responsible for inflammatory reactions in the body. Thus blocking the production of prostaglandins by blocking PLA2 helps in relieving inflammation and irritation of the skin.
Immunosuppressive action: Immune cells usually release toxins into the body to defend against foreign particles. These toxins usually cause more inflammation. Betamethasone works by interfering with this action and prevents tissue damage due to excessive inflammation.
Vasoconstrictive action: Swelling occurs when blood vessels dilate more than usual. Betamethasone works by constricting the blood vessels and helps reduce swelling and redness.
Whereas the neomycin in Betnovate-N Cream is an antibiotic. It blocks protein synthesis in the bacterial cell wall by binding to the 30S ribosome. As a result, it shows antibacterial action.
